To establish and support one-on-one, long-term relationships between positive community role models and Fayette County school students to assist youths in dealing with the complexities of school, home and community.

Friends Mentor Program

The Fayette County Board of Education Friends Mentoring program was established in 1992 to help children in our schools who are struggling academically or socially, in danger of failing their grade or may not graduate from school. Mentoring is a proven strategy for helping at-risk students who often believe that no one cares whether they stay in school or not.

Friends Mentoring is an opportunity for volunteers to make a positive impact on the life of a child. Mentors meet weekly one-on-one with their students in a school-based setting. The program focuses on assisting children in developing relationship skills, building positive life skills, and improving academic proficiency.

There are opportunities for adults, seniors, and teens to help with our mentoring program -- we need you!  

Volunteer Requirements

• Ability to make at least a one-year commitment to the program
• Ability to meet one hour per week at the school site with a student
• Application
• Criminal background check
• Attend a two-hour orientation class

Volunteers may specify the age of the child and the school location that they prefer. There are volunteers at all grade levels.
