Fayette County Alternative Education Program

Alternative School Goals:

To help each student realize the significance of his/her situation and develop strategies for completing his/her education

To construct an individualized study plan for each student to be completed on a self-paced basis

To provide students, teachers and administrators a safe and comfortable environment that promotes learning

To assist students in the transition back into the traditional school

 Mission Statement

The Fayette County Alternative Education program exists to serve the needs of middle and high school students who cannot remain in a traditional school setting.  The Alternative Program provides an innovative educational program, combined with a staff of dedicated administrators, teachers and counselors who are committed to helping students achieve their goals.

 About the Services

The guidance and counseling services for the Alternative Education Program are both traditional and uniquely tailored to the individual needs of our students.  During the intake interview, students and parents complete needs assessments and individual academic plans are developed.   Services include individual and group counseling, classroom and small-group guidance for career and educational development, parent and teacher consultation and referral to community resources available through the Fayette County Schools C.A.R.E. program.

The A.S.V.A.B. Career Exploration Program has been offered to interested juniors and seniors and our new Career Center contains valuable resources for exploration.  Representatives from the armed services, colleges and technical schools have presented programs according to availability and student interest.

 Enrollment

Students applying for the Alternative School must meet at least one of the following criteria to be eligible for an intake interview:
Long-term suspension or expelled by a tribunal or school board hearing.
Returning to complete education after incarceration by the Juvenile Justice or other court system.

 Expectations

Entrance - Parent(s) and student will attend an entrance interview to determine if this innovative program can help the student address his/her needs. Each student must successfully complete the intake interview process. Once the student is admitted, parent and student agree to a plan of study, an attendance contract, a behavior contract and a parent responsibility contract.

Academics - A plan of individualized study will be determined for each student. This plan will direct the student toward his/her appropriate grade level. The Alternative School uses many of the same instructional modules and course guides currently used in Fayette County traditional school. Presently, the Alternative School cannot offer all of the courses available in the regular schools.

Attendance - Students are expected to be at school every day.  If a student is absent, his/her parent is expected to call the Alternative School office. This ensures that the parents, students and administrators are working together to help the student achieve his/her goals.
