Low preregistration
numbers for the Fayette County School System’s After School Program (ASP)
has forced us to cancel after school programs at our middle schools for the
2008-2009 school year.
The
ASP is a self-supporting program that does not receive state or local funds
for its operation. The program is completely funded through paid tuition.
This includes each middle school site.
We
need a minimum of 30 students to preregister in the spring and commit to
attend the program throughout the next school year in order for us to open
an after school program. None of our middle schools reached this minimum
during the preregistration period that was held April 24-May 16, 2008.
Annual preregistration information is available on this web site, at every
elementary ASP site office and every middle school currently hosting a
program. Schools requesting additional publicity receive flyers for 5th
grade students attending feeder elementary schools and 6th grade students in
their school. Most middle schools also provide parents with ASP
preregistration opportunities at their 5th grade orientation night.
We
have explored several different options in an attempt to offer a middle
school program but none have proven successful or feasible. Transportation
costs and space issues prevent us from combining programs this year. Low
mid-year attendance from previous years has forced us to no longer offer
extended registration deadlines due to programs being cancelled and the
hardship this places on parents to find alternatives.
Thank
you for your continued support of the ASP. Families interested in middle
school after school programs for the 2009-2010 school year are encouraged to
return to this web site March 2009 for more information on preregistration. |
