 About Our Program

The interscholastic activity program in the Fayette County School System offers an opportunity for participation in a wide variety of student-selected activities, which we believe is a vital part of a student’s educational experiences.  Such participation is a privilege that carries with it responsibilities to the school, to the activity, to other students, to the community and to the athletes themselves.  These experiences contribute to the development of learning skills and emotional patterns that enable the student to achieve maximum benefit from his or her education.

We believe that interscholastic sports and fine arts activities promote citizenship and sportsmanship.  They instill a sense of pride in community, teach lifelong lessons of teamwork and self-discipline and facilitate the physical and emotional development of our youth.  Students who participate in activity programs tend to have higher grade-point averages, better attendance records, lower dropout rates and fewer discipline problems than students generally.

Participation in interscholastic activity programs in the Fayette County School System is entirely voluntary. The opportunity to participate in the program is extended to all eligible students who willing to assume the responsibilities congruent with the privilege.

All high schools in the Fayette County School System are members of the Georgia High School Association.

The GHSA is a voluntary organization composed of 385 public and private high schools.  It strives to promote good sportsmanship and a cooperative spirit among its member schools.  It endeavors to maintain high standards so that each pupil competing in each school is on the same basis.  In the field of athletics its interest is the safety of the participants; it is on this principle that its athletic rules are based.

The GHSA operates under a Constitution and By-Laws which outlines the scope and purpose of the Association.  It contains the standards of eligibility to be met by high school pupils for attaining the privilege of participation in interschool contest, and rules controlling the participation among schools.  By adoption of the Constitution and By-Laws through its membership, member schools have by their initiative acted to operate and discipline their interscholastic activities and contest.
