Sixth Grade Content Summaries
English/Language Arts
By
the end of sixth grade, students will be adept at reading literary and
informational text to ascertain an author’s intent and meaning. Students
will acquire and apply new vocabulary through context, stem analysis, and
use of reference tools and will read text from a variety of genre and
disciplines with a goal equivalent to twenty-five grade appropriate books
for the year (a shared goal to be met through reading in all classes). The
student will employ the steps of the writing process and will use
appropriate organizational structures that engage the reader, maintain a
coherent focus, and provide satisfactory closure. The student will
demonstrate a functional knowledge of standard American English grammar and
usage and will apply that knowledge when composing and speaking. Students
will write, but will not be limited to, narrative (fictional, personal),
multi-paragraph expository (compare/contrast), technical writing (letter),
response to literature, and multi-paragraph persuasive writing. The student
will use research skills and technology to support the composition and
publication of writing. The student will also demonstrate the skills of
listening, speaking, and viewing for a variety of purposes and in different
situations.
Math - Georgia Performance Standards
By the end of grade six,
students will understand the four arithmetic operations with whole numbers
and positive rational numbers. They will also conceptually understand ratios
and solve problems using proportional reasoning. They will compute and apply
percentages to problem-solving situations. Students will determine the
surface area and volume of solid figures. Variables will be used to
represent unknown quantities in formulae and algebraic expressions and
equations. They will predict the probability of a given event and will apply
their knowledge of statistics. (For more information, go to
www.georgiastandards.org/math.asp).
Reading
In
sixth, seventh and eighth grade student readers experience more
sophisticated pieces of literature and informational texts for study and
analysis. The students read thoughtfully and purposefully, constantly
checking for understanding. Vocabulary development, utilization and
refinement of comprehension strategies and text structures, and wide reading
in areas of interest for fluency and enjoyment characterize the balanced
literacy of the sixth, seventh and eighth grade reading classroom.
Sixth Grade Earth Science
The
Georgia Performance Standards
(www.georgiastandards.org/science.asp)
are designed to provide
students with the knowledge and skills for proficiency in earth science.
The identified content and process skills mirror Project 2061’s Benchmark
for Science Literacy and the National Research Council’s National
Science Education Standards. Hands-on, student centered, and
inquiry-based approaches are emphasized for instruction. This earth science
course is designed to give all students an overview of common earth science
strands including meteorology, geology, astronomy, oceanography, earth
resources, and human impact on the earth. To acquire the content
understandings, instruction is organized through the Characteristics and
Nature of Science which are the skills and processes of scientific thinking
and problem solving. Students will collect analyze data, recognize
relationships, display data in written and graphic form, and design
investigations to test or answer problems. For more information, visit
www.georgiastandards.org/science.asp.
