Policy JBCCA – Assignment of Students to Schools
Student Transfers Under Georgia Choice Laws
Beginning with 2009-2010 school year, parents/guardians of
students in a public elementary or secondary school in Georgia
may elect to enroll their child in a school that is located
within the school system in which the student resides other than
the one to which the student has been assigned by the local
board of education, if such school has classroom space available
after the assigned students have been enrolled. For Georgia
Special Needs Scholarship Program students, the other
consideration is the availability of programs aligned with the
students IEP. In order to request such a transfer,
parents/guardians must complete and submit an Application for
Transfer Request available online at
www.fcboe.org or at the Welcome Center, at the LaFayette
Educational Center. For the 2009-2010 school year all transfer
requests must be received by the Fayette County School System no
later than Wednesday July 15, 2009. Completed applications will
be reviewed and approved or denied on the basis of a lottery in
the event a particular school has available space and the number
of transfer requests exceeds the remaining available capacity.
Once available classroom space is reached at a school, no more
transfers will be accepted at that school. Since it is possible
that you may not receive your first choice, you may indicate
more than one choice on the Application for Transfer Request
Form. Once the verification is complete, parents/guardians will
be notified of transfer approval in writing. The student shall
be allowed to attend the requested school until he/she completes
the last grade of that school. The parent/guardian shall assume
the responsibility and cost of transportation of the student to
and from school.

site. In addition, each school has copies of its own
Report Card for Parents, which is also compiled by the Georgia
