 Preschool Special Education Program Introduction

The Fayette County School System offers an early intervention program serving three and four year old preschool children with disabilities living within the county. Disabilities may include but are not limited to physically impaired, sensory impaired, speech/language impaired, and significantly developmentally delayed. The goal of this early intervention program is to assist the child in developing the skills necessary to participate successfully in the school setting.

Evaluations of a child's language, cognitive, motor, emotional/behavioral and self-help skills are provided by a team of psychologists, educators, and therapists. A screening and eligibility committee reviews the referral, screens, performs assessments, and gathers information to determine if a child is eligible for services.

Preschool special education teachers and paraprofessionals along with speech, occupational and physical therapists server eligible students as recommended in their Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Services can be provided in a variety of settings including center-based, community-based, and skill building classes. A continuum of services is available that ranges from thirty minutes to 26 hours weekly. The IEP team determines the amount, location and type of program needed for the child

Parent involvement is a major component of the preschool programs. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in the education of their children, including the evaluative process and development of their child's IEP. In addition, home visits, parent meetings and workshops are scheduled to offer support to the families of children enrolled in the preschool special education program. Parents continue their involvement in the decision-making process as their child transitions from the preschool program into the kindergarten program.

 About Home Visits

Throughout the year, parents are encouraged to take advantage of home visits.  Home visits provide great opportunity to discuss your child's progress in a relaxed, one to one atmosphere.  Home visits also provide parents and teachers opportunities to develop plans for carry-over of skills from the school to home environments.  Carry-over of skills learned within the home environment to the classroom is facilitated through home visits as teachers have opportunities to see children interact in their most natural surroundings.  Please know that this service is available to you at any time throughout the year. In addition to home visits, daycare visits are also available.
