School system officials kicked off the new school year with their first quarterly meeting with county and municipal first responders, district educators and community members.
School principals, counselors, county office administrators, and Fayette County Board of Education members met with representatives from the Fayetteville, Peachtree City and Tyrone police departments, Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, Fayette County Fire Department and Emergency Services, faith-based organizations, the Fayette County District Attorney, and community leaders to discuss how all entities can work together to increase the safety and security of the county’s schools.
The school system has been conducting the quarterly meetings for the last eight years where problems or concerns are addressed, and ideas and suggestions are made that focus on prevention, intervention and response, all in a coordinated effort to increase the safety and security of students and the entire school community.
Suggestions made at the first meeting of the year included incorporating the protocols of a traffic stop into driver’s education training so that students understand what to do, and what not to do, if they are pulled over by a police officer, and increasing positive interaction and communication with students by having officers join them at school for lunch.
