Not all school systems have licensed nurses at all of the their schools, so this is a good reason to celebrate National School Nurse Day on May 11 by showing appreciation to Fayette’s school nurses.
The school system has 30 school nurses: one full-time coordinator, one part-time special education nurse, 16 full-time and eight part-time Registered Nurses, and four full-time and one part-time Licensed Practical Nurses. The school nurses care for 25-100 students per day with illnesses, chronic health conditions, and injuries. Also, 25-40 students receive medication from school nurses every day.
At the end of the 2014-2015 school year, the county’s school nurses collectively cared for 150,653 students, assisted 39,649 students with medications, and performed 35,856 special procedures such as blood sugar checks, respiratory treatments, catheterizations, and tube feedings.

The national theme for this year is “The School Nurse: Better Health, Better Learning,” which speaks of the significant healthcare roles of school nurses in school communities across the country. School nurses lead the way to advance health and support education by ensuring that students are safe, healthy, and ready to learn.
